The Origins of the Edamanakalathy Family traces back to a Brahmin Family from Perumballoor (originally from North Paravoor) who settled down at the Edamana Property of Keezhmadangu near Arakkuzha on the banks of the Thodupuzha river.
This family converted to Christianity through baptism. Around the year 1700, one of family members who had adopted the name Yakkob(Jacob) after his baptism, moved out and settled down with his family in the property of Vettuparackal Family in Kavana. This is the beginning of the Vettuparackal family. The eldest son of Vettuparackal Yakkoob, named Iype, got married from the Chollamadom family and stayed in the ancestral home of the Vettuparackal family.
The second son of Vettuparackal Yakkob, named Maatthu, married Mariamma Kollamparampil of Thalayolapparampu, and settled in the property which he had purchased from the Kalathil Kartha of Kizhakkambalam, and he was henceforth known as Kalathil Maatthu. This is the beginning of the Edamanakalathy Kudumbam.
Kalapurackal Branch
Out of the three sons of Kalathil Maatthu, the eldest one, named Iype, stayed in Kalappurackal property, and his descendants came to be known under the name of Kalappurackal family. It was from this Kalappurackal family headed by Iype that the branches of Thalackal, Edappazha, and Padathil, evolved.
Pulparambil Branch
The second son of Kalathil Maatthu, named Varghese, settled down in the property of Pulparambil in Manjalloor and his future generations constitute the Pulparambil family. The descendants of the elder son of Varghese Pulparambil, Maatthu, came to be known under the new family name of Kizhake Pulparambil, and the descendants of the second son, Ulahannaan, came to known under the new family name of Padinjaare Pulparambil for a while . Fr. Xavier CMI, Fr. Marcel CMI, and Fr. Mark CMI are descendants of the Kizhake Pulparambil.
Kottuppillil Branch
The third son of Kalathil Maatthu, Uthuppu, purchased property from the Kottuppillil family of Kavana, and his descendants now form the Kottuppillil family. The children of Uthuppu evolved into sub branches of Kottuppilly, Malekkudy, Inchaplackal, Nellikkunnel and Mannoor.
The descendants of the Edamana Kalathil family are said to be above 50,000 and are spread all over the world, engaged in wide variety of dignified professions, being key players in their communities.
